giles church there has been a church on this spot since at least the middle of the twelfth century. the church was substantially rebuilt in victorian times, although parts of the former buildings remain, including the twelfth century font and fifteenth century tower. here people down the generations have come to seek the deep peace of god. as the congregation at st giles, we try to combine traditional and modern forms of worship. we aim to make the gospel available to contemporary society whilst being aware of the ancient traditions of the christian faith. a warm welcome awaits anyone who wishes to use the church and what it has to offer. we are delighted that we have a lot of weddings and baptisms at saint giles. the church is open most mornings for quiet contemplation and prayer and also in the summer months during afternoons. our worship centres on the sung eucharist at 9:30 every sunday morning, where all ages are welcome and there is a fun club for children. there are a number of other forms of worship: a regular contemplative service with silence and readings, a healing service, regular weekday celebrations of holy communion, traditional evensong and a meditation group. on the third wednesday of each month at 5:30pm children and their families enjoy an activity and story session with tea in what is called ‘godly play’. we also have a number of social events. father mark writes.. about advent on 2nd december, advent begins. it is my favourite time of the church’s year. it is a period of preparation for christ’s coming at christmas. and it is also a time to look forward to christ’s promised second coming at the end of time, as we say in the lord’s prayer ‘thy kingdom come.’ the hymns of advent, often called advent carols, are hauntingly beautiful. they are different from christmas carols in the way they express hope and expectation rather than fulfilment. they speak to us of journeying rather than arriving. two very popular advent customs are the advent calendar and the advent wreath. the advent calendar, at least in its traditional form, provides us with a picture of a christmas symbol behind a window for every day of december. in this way it helps us prepare inwardly for christmas. the advent wreath has a candle to be lit for each of the four sundays of advent. these candles are purple, to symbolise sorrow for our failings as we head towards christmas. then there is one white candle in the centre to symbolise the light that christ brings to our lives. the season of advent reminds us that the run up to christmas is not just a time of buying presents, food and drink, and posting cards. rather it can be a time of inner preparation for the gift of jesus christ. it thereby reminds us that life isn’t just about the accumulation of possessions or satisfying our physical needs. rather life provides us with the opportunity to draw near to love, goodness, beauty, and god. with every good and warm wish for christmas from mark crowther-alwyn dates over advent and christmas advent carol service: advent sunday 2 nd december 6.30 pm. this service marks the beginning of the bell festival and will include the blessing of the bells. advent hymns are some of the most beautiful hymns of the church’s year and are often under appreciated. please come and sing these beautiful carols by candlelight and hear the advent readings from the prophets preparing the way for the lord. christmas carol service: thursday 20 th december 7.30 pm. followed by wine and light refreshments. christmas eve christingle service: monday 24 th december 4 pm. we invite children to dress as figures from the nativity story if they wish. midnight communion at dethick church: monday 24 th december 10 pm. candlelit midnight mass at st giles: monday 24 th december 11.30 pm. with the blessing of the crib. christmas day sung eucharist with carols: 9.30 am tuesday 25 th december. sherry and mince pies afterwards. christmas day holy communion at christ church, holloway: 11 am tuesday 25 th december epiphany family eucharist: 9.30 am on sunday 6 th january. during this service we have the moving ceremony for the chalking of the door for the start of the new year. candlemas family eucharist: 9.30 am on sunday 3 rd february. this beautiful service includes the blessing and procession of candles to mark the presentation of jesus, the light
